Management accountant CV example (CIMA or ACCA)

Finance readers judge a management accountant by the scale of the business, the money you're responsible for and what changed because of your work. One context line per employer and real figures do most of the work.

From vague to specific

Each stronger line comes from answering one question. The facts are the candidate’s, not invented.

BeforeResponsible for month-end.

We’d askHow many entities, and how long did it take?

AfterRan the month-end close for 3 UK entities, bringing reporting forward from working day 8 to day 5

BeforeDid cost analysis.

We’d askWhat did you find, and what happened?

AfterAnalysed product margins across 120 lines and identified 9 loss-making products; 6 were repriced and 3 discontinued

BeforeWorked with budget holders.

We’d askHow many, and what did you give them?

AfterGave 11 budget holders a monthly actual-versus-budget report and a 30-minute review, replacing ad hoc email queries

What recruiters look for

  • One line on each employer: turnover or headcount and industry, because scale stands in for complexity. ICAEW; Michael Page UK
  • Figures for the money you're responsible for, money saved, and impact in gross and percentage terms. Michael Page UK
  • Most bullets about what you achieved, with only a few plain responsibilities per role. ACCA Careers; Robert Walters
  • Exact qualification status: passing CIMA's Operational level earns the Diploma in Management Accounting; only members use ACMA. AICPA & CIMA

Common mistakes

  • No employer context. “Management Accountant, Arden” says nothing about the size of the job.
  • Calling yourself “part-qualified CIMA” or using ACMA before membership. Say which level you've passed.
  • Figures without a baseline. “Improved reporting” needs a from and a to.

A fictional candidate. Figures are illustrative; on your CV, every figure has to be yours and defensible in an interview.
